“Louie Louie Louie” is Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s eleventh studio album, and reveals the evolution of swing, jazz and popular music through the songs of Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan and Louis Prima, three artist that revolutionized American music in the earliest days of New Orleans jazz and ragtime.

Although still largely associated with the ’90s neo-swing movement, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy have long outrun that moment’s MTV zeitgeist and spent the 2010s deepening their jazz roots. The past decade-and-a-half have found them branching out, exploring New Orleans blues, Cajun, and second-line traditions on 2003’s Save My Soul, and paying tribute to legendary Harlem bandleader Cab Calloway on 2009’s How Big Can You Get? In this spirit of reinvestigating their influences, the band’s 11th studio album, 2017’s urbane and upbeat Louie Louie Louie, finds them celebrating three of their biggest musical heroes: Louis Armstrong, Louis Prima. and Louis Jordan. Here, the band round up a nicely curated set of tunes popularized by the three “Louies” and inject them with their own zesty brand of jump blues. Some of the song choices are deliciously on the nose with cuts like Jordan’s “Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Chickens,” Prima’s “Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days,” and Jordan’s “Jack, You’re Dead!,” feeling like well-loved road covers the band have played hundreds of times. Others, especially Armstrong’s Herculean “Struttin’ with Some Barbecue” and the suavely refined “Basin Street Blues,” with their nuanced harmonies and tricky horn lines, vibrate with a sense of danger and ambition as if the band had dared themselves to make them their own. Thankfully, they do. Elsewhere, we get equally compelling takes on “Dinah,” “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie,” “Knock Me a Kiss,” and more. It’s also fun to hear the band put their own stamp on one of the biggest anthems of the neo-swing movement, Prima’s “Jump, Jive an’ Wail,” popularized in 1998 by the Brian Seltzer Orchestra. Still centered on lead singer/guitarist Scotty Morris, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy have settled into a warm, crisply delivered style of swing that’s studio savvy and precise while also full of in-the-moment improvisation and an overall live-sounding aesthetic. Helping to achieve this aesthetic is longtime pianist Joshua Levy, who supplied all the arrangements on Louie Louie Louie. Also impressive are bandmembers trumpeter Glen “The Kid” Marhevka, alto and tenor saxophonist Karl Hunter, and baritone saxophonist Andy Rowley, who all get plenty of room to solo. The result is an album that strikes a balance between Jazz at Lincoln Center-style adherence to tradition and dynamic, pop-informed bravura showmanship.

Small Town presents guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Thomas Morgan in a program of duets, the poetic chemistry of their playing captured live at New York s hallowed Village Vanguard. Small Town sees Frisell and Morgan pay homage to jazz elder Lee Konitz with his Subconscious Lee, and there are several country/blues-accented Frisell originals, including the hauntingly melodic title track. The duo caps the set with an inimitable treatment of John Barry’s famous James Bond theme Goldfinger.

Before Small Town, guitarist Bill Frisell hadn’t led an ECM date since 1988’s Lookout for Hope. He started hinting at a return to the label in the early 2010s. He was part of Stefano Bollani’s trio on the lovely Joy in Spite of Everything in 2014, and in Andrew Cyrille’s quartet on 2016’s The Declaration of Musical Independence. Frisell formed a duo with longtime bassist and sometime-collaborator Thomas Morgan for the live date Small Town, recorded at the Village Vanguard. (They last worked together on record for Paul Motian’s The Windmills of Your Mind in 2011.)

This program is eclectic; both players reach for intimacy at every turn, though given the setting, they couldn’t avoid it even if they wanted to.

The set opener is Motian’s “It Should Have Happened a Long Time Ago.” The tune was first issued on a 1984 trio album of the same name featuring Frisell and saxophonist Joe Lovano. This duo version contains all the nuance and grace of the original, though the late drummer’s whispering elegance is missed. A wonderful contrast is created by the sprightly, swinging read of Lee Konitz’s “Subconscious Lee” that follows. (Konitz was in the audience and this was pulled out spontaneously as a tribute.) Morgan’s “walk” is just as active and harmonically rich as Frisell’s deep, melodic post-bop playing. The guitarist’s predilection for Americana (dating back to 1997’s Nashville) is showcased in the middle of the program with a faithful reading of the Carter Family standard “Wildwood Flower” and on the title track, which weaves together a tender folk melody with blues accents. Fats Domino’s “What a Party” is introduced by Morgan’s punchy bassline. A rootsy R&B tune by nature, this pair pull elements of New Orleans jazz and Bo Diddley-esque rock & roll from its harmonics. “Song for Andrew No. 1” is a long ballad that appeared on Cyrille’s album as “Andrew Cyrille.” The manner of interplay here is spacious and tempered yet deceptive in its intricacy. After the overly long original “Poet-Pearl,” the set closes with a fantastic read of “Goldfinger,” with Morgan’s bass plumbing the depths of the tune’s harmony, prompting Frisell to explore the blues (slightly) hidden under its changes. Morgan is a deeply intuitive player with a glorious earthy, woody tone. He anchors Frisell’s more speculative tendencies, allowing the unexpected (and perhaps previously undiscovered) room to emerge and hold its ground between them with the seams showing. Small Town is an excellent showcase for this duo; here’s hoping it’s only a first volley.

Bobby Scott was the Orson Welles of jazz. His prodigious talents, largely realized at a remarkably early age, were manifold: vocalist, pianist, vibraphonist and composer. Although never a household name like some of his jazz contemporaries, Scott will always be remembered for his pop songwriting. He co-wrote both “A Taste Of Honey” which earned him a Grammy Award and “He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother,” a #1 hit for The Hollies. Both songs have been recorded dozens of times by myriad artists over the years.

Later known as an accomplished singer, this early recording by Scott is entirely instrumental and serves as a showcase for his talents on piano and vibes. Scott was still a teenager when he recorded this album but his skill belied his youth. He would have a relatively short career in jazz, choosing to focus on composing pop music, but JazzWax says that Scott’s early albums like Great Scott “display understated confidence and charisma that sound great today.”

Vocalist, trumpeter and songwriter Bria Skonberg re-imagines it all on her new OKeh/Masterworks album, “With a Twist”. Coming off a recent Juno Award for her first OKeh collection, Bria, Skonberg spins her cool and confident vocal style – and her sleek and timeless jazz chops – into a program that playfully nods to tradition while always looking ahead.

Bria Skonberg is a trumpet playing vocalist who is blessed with a beautiful voice on both instruments. An award winning musician who studied with the great Warren Vache, she has had three releases prior to this. The baker’s dozen of standards, lesser known works and originals assembled here is both impressive and fun, as evidenced by the song selections. My Baby Just Cares for Me is given a typical Bria treatment: trumpet filigrees intertwine with piccolo, courtesy of Kathleen Nester and alto flute, via Sheryl Henze, along with trombone, bass, drums, piano and strings. Bria blows an extremely impressive trumpet and sings superbly, often reminiscent of Diana Krall. The comparisons are undeniable. Great voice, great instrumentalist and a penchant for the great American songbook. Alright, Okay, You Win combined with Soul Bossa Nova is given a big band treatment that allows her impressive trumpet to step out. Cocktails for Two’s opening section is primarily a vocal with pianist Sullivan Fortner. It then segues into a broader band piece with tenor player Evan Arntzen given much space.
Her take on the Leonard Cohen-penned Dance Me To The End of Love is tenderly rendered, framed by flutes and then her expressive trumpet. It’s Oh So Quiet is, as advertised a quiet piece, albeit with a rambunctious bridge, reminding of perhaps a Broadway number. It’s fun and the musicianship is as impressive as the lyrics are humorous. The three Skonberg original tunes are the most impressive of the lot. How I know has a Latin groove and clever lyrics. “Splittin a cab drive/your hand found mine/ driving’ down the East side/Now every song is about you/and every moment feels like Déjà vu…” Some Kind of Crazy is Matt Wilson drum-driven and again lyrically clever. Sung with an inherent chuckle it combines tenor and trumpet in a brilliant conversation. Time to Go, the closer, has classic written all over it. More nimble lyrics beautifully sung, while the band and the trumpeter wail. The instrumental passages are almost Art Blakey-ish. With a Twist is a wonderful collection of songs and a joyful release.

Bud Powell was one of the most influential pianists in the history of jazz. Along with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie he was instrumental in the development of bebop, and his virtuosity as a pianist led many to call him “the Charlie Parker of the piano”.

Bud was, and always will be, a main influencein the interpretation and understanding of true jazz playing on the piano. The way he bounces, sings and keeps a natural flow and incredible hard articulation in the swing and the way he speaks the melody line – is like a Baptist reverend spreading the good news at the service. It is like it is an ongoing universal flow that forces itself through him, and he can only serve it no matter the price. He speaks the truth about this music form and like Bach – you will stay touched as a listener or disciple for the rest of your life.

Listening to a new Charles Lloyd is always a guaranteed ticket on an inspired and spiritual inner journey. Not far off his 80th birthday, the Memphis saxophonist is still ploughing his furrow, never straying from the task or leaving her listeners cold. On stage, the experience takes on an additional aspect. That’s proven on Passin’ Thrurecorded live in summer 2016 on the stage of the Montreux Jazz Festival and at Lensic in Santa Fe alongside her New Quartet which is made up of bassist Reuben Rogers, drummer Eric Harland and pianist Jason Moran. This recording was brought out by the label Blue Note and marks this untouchable outfit’s tenth birthday. The menu of this improvised feast includes more recent themes, but older ones too, like Passin’ Thrufor which the record is named and which Lloyd first recorded in 1963 with the Chico Hamilton quintet. The quartet have always played a pretty essential role in the saxophonist’s career. It had its first incarnation in 1965 with Keith Jarrett on the piano, Cecil McBee on the double bass and Jack DeJohnette on the drums. Even if Lloyd would regularly return to this configuration, he considers the present New Quartet to be one of his most accomplished. “From the notes of our first concert, I knew that it was a magical formation.” Ten years later, the closeness and the tenor of the exchanges between the four musicians is intense. Here and there, Charles Lloyd blows up a few storms whose secrets are all his own, and which he plays with a beatific pleasure.

Recorded live in 2011 at a series of all-star concerts in New York City to celebrate Chick Corea’s 70th birthday, the almost four hours of performances on this three album box set find Corea collaborating with 10 different bands and a total of 28 musicians, including Herbie Hancock, Wynton Marsalis, John McLaughlin, Stanley Clarke and Bobby McFerrin.

Over the course of an artist’s lifetime, especially one well into their fifth decade like Chick Corea, it’s not uncommon to see a great musician look back and take stock of what he’s done and who he’s worked with, and that’s exactly what Corea does on 2017’s The Musician. To mark his 75th birthday in 2016, the lauded pianist played a six-week stint of shows at the Blue Note in New York city. During the event, he was joined by a bevy of guests including many longtime friends and collaborators like Herbie Hancock, Bobby McFerrin, Wynton Marsalis, John McLaughlin, Stanley Clarke, and others. The shows were filmed, recorded, and released in 2017 as part of The Musician three-disc album and documentary project. It’s fascinating to hear Corea take this time-traveling odyssey through his career, and despite the epic nature of the six-week event, he never sounds anything less than engaged, always playing with his trademark intensity and playful spontaneity. His duets are particularly engaging; just listen to his enthralling interplay with singer Bobby McFerrin on “I’ve Got the World on a String” and “Spain” and you’ll be captivated. Similarly compelling are his head-to-head sparrings with pianist Herbie Hancock on “Hot House,” “Dolphin Dance,” and “Cantaloupe Island.” Elsewhere, Corea revisits one of his most popular ensembles, Return to Forever, with bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Lenny White, and guitarist Frank Gambale. A pre-eminent fusion group, here they take an unexpected acoustic approach to several of their best-known tunes, “Captain Marvel” and “Light as a Feather.” We also get a taste of Corea’s trio with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Brian Blade, who deliver a nuanced version of “I Hear a Rhapsody.” Other discs showcase equally compelling collaborations with luminaries like pianist Marcus Roberts and vibraphonist Gary Burton, and a reunion with his Elektrik Band featuring drummer Dave Weckl and bassist John Patitucci. We also get a thrilling homage to early Corea employer, jazz trumpet legend Miles Davis, with his From Miles band featuring trumpeter Wallace Roney, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and other Davis alum. Indeed, The Musician is a superb live document spotlighting Corea in settings that recall the best of his classic albums and proving how remarkably well both he and his music have aged.

For his third ECM release as a leader, Chris Potter presents a new acoustic quartet that naturally blends melodic rhapsody with rhythmic muscle. The group includes superlative musicians well known to followers of ECM’s many recordings from New York over the past decade: keyboardist David Virelles, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Marcus Gilmore, who each shine in addition to the leader on multiple horns. The Dreamer Is the Dream features Potter on tenor saxophone – the instrument that has made him one of the most admired players of his generation.

Over a 20-plus-year career, saxophonist Chris Potter has established himself as a fine sideman, soloist, and bandleader, and a purveyor of musical versatility. A list of his credits reads like a who’s-who of modern music, and his own recordings have run the gamut from fiery electric jazz to vanguard experimentation to solid post-bop. The Dreamer Is the Dream is his third leader date for ECM. Here he is accompanied by pianist David Virelles, drummer Marcus Gilmore, and bassist Joe Martin. The album is comprised of six Potter originals, most of which run from nearly eight minutes to over ten. These tunes all offer abundant opportunities to explore his diverse lyricism, preponderance of interplay, and improvisation, and given this particular lineup, showcase his rhythmic muscle. “Heart in Hand” opens as a duet between pianist and saxophonist; the ensemble enters gradually, expanding the tune’s ballad principle but gradually shifting into more uptempo and exploratory terrain. “Ilimba” commences with the sound of Gilmore’s kalimba, but after a brief modal statement by Potter, his double-timed drums introduce Virelles’ Afro-Latin groove and the entire jam becomes a knotty, funky sprint that swings like mad. Potter examines the margins in his solo, but remains tied to the pulse at the center. He introduces the title cut via bass clarinet. Its lyrical beauty is heightened by Martin’s gorgeous bass solo. When the leader reverts to his saxophone to play a duet with him, a textural element is added onto the melody. “Yasodhara” is the longest track here and the most kinetic. Gilmore’s hand percussion leads Potter’s horn in, while Virelles and Martin follow very closely. The head’s harmonic center has within it just enough openness for the band to develop it and they do, with knotty angles built in by the composer. As they engage with one another, new levels of harmony are absorbed into the mix, leading to fiery, complex solos from Virelles and Potter. The Dreamer Is the Dream is impressive for all the right reasons. Potter’s tunes are all top flight, for one. He appears to have written them for the considerable strength of this band and he makes no attempt to ride herd over them. For their part, the players’ intuitive engagement with him and one another is dictated by a collective willingness to let the music do the primary talking and respond in kind. This is yet another strong outing for Potter.

Blue Note recording artist Chihiro Yamanaka is one of the most exciting jazz pianists and composers to come out of Japan. “Because” is her creative reworking of the Beatles classics.

Yamanaka played piano from the age of four, studying classical music and was eventually awarded the grand prize of Japan’s Gumma Fresh Talent competition. In the USA, she studied at the Berklee College Of Music, graduating in 2000. Chihiro Yamanaka (山中千尋) is a Japanese jazz pianist and composer. “Monk Studies”, Chihiro Yamanaka’s new album, released by Blue Note label. The Japanese piano player reinterpretes famous Monk’s classics such as Misterioso, In Walked Bud, Ruby My Dear, Hackensack, and others.

Monk Studies is a calculated album of piano jazz. At ten tracks, there isn’t much wasted time, each track carries with it a unique quality but together, they work toward a greater purpose, making Monk Studies an enjoyably easy album to listen through in one siting. There are some more experimental and exciting moments as well, “Nobody Knows” has this sampled and looped vocal line that adds some juxtaposition to Yamanaka’s piano playing, it’s a little warbled and sounds like she’s playing right on top of an older record. I was expecting a metal guitar riff to burst out of “In Walked Bud” at any moment, sadly it never happened but its still great. Monk Studies ends with “Abide in Me” which is a gospel track lifted right out of Sunday church, but funneled through a greasy back entrance to some nightclub. Anyway if you like more traditional jazz music or a mixture of traditional piano with contemporary jazz touches.

Chihiro Yamanaka ( 山中千尋 ) is a Japanese jazz pianist and composer. She has more than a dozen recordings released under her own name, principally on the Verve label, most of which have been released internationally. As of 2012, she is based in New York City. “Reminiscence”, her eighth album as leader, is packed with her unique personality, deriving from the accumulation of her years of colorful activities. She creates her unmistakable world by integrating her own swing, bluesiness, funkiness, as well as her free viewpoint towards a wide range of music genres, all in line. A contemporary jazz piano which stretches outwardly after absorbing all of the old school jazz piano – experiencing her free-spirited and full-of-personality groove is part of the thrilling joy only jazz can provide. This album seems to have a special meaning to her. The title is a reminder of the nuclear accident in her hometown of Fukushima.

Reminiscence is pianist Chihiro Yamanaka’s second major-label U.S. release, following 2011’s acclaimed Forever Begins. Yamanaka plays with two different trios on this date; one features her performing unit of bassist Yoshi Waki and drummer John Davis, while the other includes bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Bernard “Pretty” Purdie. Yamanaka plays acoustic piano, Fender Rhodes, and organ in an ambitious program that highlights jazz, pop, Latin, and Brazilian covers, and includes a lone original, the opener “Rain, Rain and Rain.” Reminiscence stands in sharp contrast to Forever Begins, which was heavy on fiery bop and post-bop. By comparing their respective track lists, one might be tempted to think that this set is laid-back by comparison. In this case, appearances are deceiving. Check her reading of the Burt Bacharach nugget “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” where she not only deconstructs the harmony but rebuilds it with an expansive new architecture and a syncopated Latin rhythmic pulse. While her reading of Horace Silver’s funky Latin groover “Soul Searchin'” is relatively straight-ahead, her reliance on minor modes and a further nod to Bacharach in her chord fills extrapolate its essence while keeping the funky blues feel intact. Her version of Leon Russell’s “This Masquerade” is not only elegant but wonderfully eloquent, with subtle chord voicings and shimmering shapes. Her solo turns the tune inside out without giving up its graceful, sensual center. Another surprise here is her nearly straight read of Marcos Valle’s “Ele e Ela,” full of nearly voice-like phrasing and a beautiful breezy spaciousness. Her organ on Bob Berg’s “Friday Night at the Cadillac Club” reveals the composer’s debt to Silver, and her organ playing is more John Patton than Jack McDuff, but still swings like mad. “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” alternates between nearly classical counterpoint and pointillism and funky Rhodes work, and near its end gets into some mind-bending production tricks. Ultimately, Reminiscence proves to American audiences (outside of New York, where she has been based for some time) what Japanese audiences have known for a long time: that Yamanaka is a fierce talent with robust chops, plenty of soul, and a seemingly endless imagination for the musical possibilities of the piano trio.

03 – They Long To Be Close To You

Coleman Hawkins recorded three sessions for Impulse Records in the early to mid ’60s. Of the three, Today And Now is the most compelling. The unusual choice of repertoire is what sets this album apart. Versions of the traditional song “Go Li’s Liza” and the fairly obscure Quincy Jones ballad “Quintessence” are creatively rendered. Indeed, Hawk seems inspired throughout; he plays with an abandon that is altogether effortless.

Tracklist:
01 – Go Li’l Liza
02 – Quintessence

04 – Love Song from ‘Apache’

In the course of a long and illustrious career, Hawkins has subjected his style to continuous development. Intellectually and technically flexible, the style has always remained the man, distinctive and personal. This album reveals a new deployment of resources, a new viewpoint arrived at after a period of reflection.

Hawkins’s last strong recording finds the veteran, 43 years after his recording debut with Mamie Smith’s Jazz Hounds, improvising creatively on a wide variety of material on this CD, ranging from “Intermezzo” and “Here’s That Rainy Day” to “Red Roses for a Blue Lady” and “Indian Summer.” Best is an adventurous version of “Out of Nowhere” that shows that the tenor-saxophonist was still coming up with new ideas in 1965.

Trumpeter Conte Candoli recorded this 1954 session of jazz classics and standards in Los Angeles with his quartet consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, drummer Stan Levey and bassist Max Bennett. Candoli leaves his musicians lots of space for soloing; at the same time he doesn’t miss any opportunity to show off his own bop trumpet talent.

One of the tightest, sharpest sessions ever from trumpeter Conte Candoli – an early date done for Bethlehem Records, with a quartet setting that gives Conte plenty of room to cook! The solos are bold and fierce right from the start – with an energy that goes beyond even Candoli’s work in bigger groups – and the rhythms are often very lively, and seem to push Conte onto his best level of expression – thanks to work from Stan Levey on drums, Max Bennett on bass, and Claude Williamson on piano. There’s a bit more bite here than you’d guess from the west coast pedigree of the group – and titles include ‘On The Alamo’, ‘I Can’t Get Started’, ‘Tune For Tex’, ‘Fine & Dandy’, ‘Night Flight’, and ‘I’ll Remember April’.

Tracklist:
01 – Fine And Dandy
02 – Night Flight
03 – I Can’t Get Started

Originally released on 10-inch vinyl in 1955 under the title Conte Candoli, this reissue from West Coast jazz trumpeter Conte Candoli shows a strong Miles Davis influence. The album is also notable for the performances of Candoli’s session musicians, specifically tenor sax player Bill Holman.

Conte Candoli was born in Mishawaka IN (USA) in 1927 and played during the 1940s trumpet in the Woody Herman band. Between 1947 and 1953 he is to be found in several big bands like Stan Kenton’s and Charlie Barnet’s and some smaller groups lead by Charlie Ventura and Chubby Jackson. In 1954 he made his own group, and moved to the east coast where he became a member of the Howard Rumsey Lighthouse All Stars. With his own group he made the recordings available on this remaster-reissue.

Brilliant technical jazz drummer with phenomenal career, including collaboration with genre’s top names and an unlikely rock’n’roll era hit. Lyrical is a word sometimes used to describe Cozy Cole’s drumming style because his melodious technique goes far beyond mere beat-keeping. The recordings that appeared under his name in the late ’50s and ’60s are mostly big-band jazz instrumentals that emphasize the drums. Cole is cited as an influence by many contemporary rock drummers, including Cozy Powell, who took his nickname “Cozy” from Cole.
