Peace Beyond Passion is an album by Me’shell Ndegeocello. It was
released on June 25, 1996, on Maverick Records. The album peaked
at #63 on the Billboard Top 200 list in 1996. The album also
peaked at #15 on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart. It went on to
become Me’shell’s most commercially successful album. The album
was positively received by music critics. The album was also
nominated for the ‘Best R&B Album’ Grammy Award in 1997.

The first single “Leviticus: Faggot” peaked at #15 on Billboard’s
Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart in 1996. The music video was
positively received on R&B outlets, despite its heavy storyline.

The second single and the biggest hit from the album was a Bill
Wither’s cover “Who Is He (And What Is He To You?)”. The single
reached #1 on the Billboard Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart in
November 1996, as well as peaking at #34 on Billboard’s Top
R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart.

The third and final single was a remixed version of the ballad
“Stay”, which peaked at #15 on Billboard’s Dance Music/Club Play
Singles chart and #67 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Singles &
Tracks chart.

Gino Vannelli (born June 16, 1952) is a Canadian singer,
songwriter, musician and composer.

Ranging from soul to soft rock, singer and songwriter Gino
Vannelli earned several hits during the 1970s, including “People
Gotta Move” and “I Just Wanna Stop.” Vannelli learned to play the
drums early in life and studied music theory at McGill University.
He formed an R&B band with two brothers, but later began recording
solo material for RCA in 1970. He became popular four years later
when A&M released his hit single “People Gotta Move,” from the
Powerful People album (retitled People Gotta Move). Many albums
followed, including Storm at Sunup (1975), Gist of the Gemini
(1976), A Pauper in Paradise (1977), Brother to Brother (1978),
Nightwalker (1981), Black Cars (1985), Big Dreamers Never Sleep
(1987), Inconsolable Man (1990), and Live in Montreal (1992).
After a lengthy absence from the recording studio, Vannelli
returned in 1995 with Yonder Tree; Slow Love followed three years
later. After yet another lengthy absence from the studio, Gino
recorded the ambitious Canto in 2003 and 2006′s These Are the
Days, which featured remastered recordings of some of his best-
known work alongside seven new compositions. A Good Thing,
featuring a CD and accompanying book of poetry, was issued in
early 2009, followed by another CD-book package, Stardust in the
Sand, later that same year.

of his 30th birthday, though it wasn’t released until shortly
after his 34th birthday in 2001. Primarily a solo release
featuring his piano and vocals, Connick returns to his jazz roots
with a vengeance, though he doesn’t stick exclusively to jazz
repertoire; examples include his down-home vocals accompanying a
strutting take of Fats Domino’s “I’m Walkin’,” a campy, Monk-like
waltz treatment of “Somewhere My Love (Lara’s Theme)” (from the
film Dr. Zhivago), and an imaginative reworking of the usually
nauseating pop hit “Tie a Yellow Ribbon.” Connick salutes Louis
Armstrong by singing and playing “The Gypsy” and a romping “Way
Down Yonder in New Orleans.” He revives two songs that have fallen
from favor: a rollicking take of Cole Porter’s “Don’t Fence Me In”
and the moody ballad “Don’t Like Goodbyes,” a collaboration
between Harold Arlen and Truman Capote. The guest spots are a
special treat. Connick’s former bassist, Ben Wolfe, joins him for
a stripped-down, slower-than-usual take of “If I Were a Bell” and
Reverend James Moore (in one of his last recordings prior to his
death) adds his organ and vocal on Doc Pomus’ gospel-flavored
“There Is Always One More Time.” The big surprise is that Wynton
Marsalis is featured on piano, initially accompanying Connick’s
vocal on “I Only Miss Her When I Think of Her” before giving up
the bench to the singer and finishing this lovely ballad on
trumpet. Jazz fans attracted to Connick in his early days will
greatly appreciate this very fine effort, but will wonder why it
took so long for it to be released.

Lee Ritenour, a superior studio guitarist, has recorded very few
jazz albums throughout his career, preferring to play melodic pop
and light funk. On the rare occasions when he has had an urge to
perform jazz, Ritenour has been more than happy to show off the
influence of Wes Montgomery; therefore, this tribute is a logical
move, even if the results are not all that exciting. Ritenour
mostly plays pieces from the later (and more commercial) half of
Montgomery’s career, along with four of his own originals that are
sort of in the tradition. He also hedges his bet a little by
throwing in a Bob Marley reggae tune. For jazz listeners who wish
to sample some Lee Ritenour, this is one of his better recordings.
