Bassist Stanley Clarke, guitarist Bireli Lagrne, and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty comprise a trio initially brought together for Ponty's 50th anniversary all-star concert, now releasing a proper album to document their virtuoso interplay.

The occasion for this trio to work together was a 2010 concert that celebrated violinist Jean-Luc Ponty's 50th anniversary as a recording artist. Both the violinist and Stanley Clarke had collaborated before (a previous electric trio set with Al Di Meola, the Rite Of Strings was issued in 1995), but neither had collaborated with French jazz guitarist Birli Lagrne prior to that evening. In playing for a mere 20 minutes, they created the impetus for D-Stringz --- though it took two years for them to clear their schedules and get into a Brussels studio. These ten tunes are an assortment of standards and originals. The album is an acoustic, straight-ahead date that employs flawless swinging bop and post-bop, as well as 21st century takes on gypsy and soul-jazz and funk. John Coltrane's "Blue Train" is offered in cut time. Ponty covers the horn lines while Lagrne plays choppy, meaty chords and Clarke redefines the bass' role in a walking 12-bar blues. Ponty's solo offers the right amount of flash and punch, touching on both gypsy and modal jazz traditions. Lagrne syncopates his butt off in the changes. The reading of Joe Zawinul's Cannonball Adderley vehicle, "Mercy Mercy Mercy," is a showcase for Lagrne's gorgeous chord voicings. Ponty's solo nearly sings, and further, a call-and-response exchange between Clarke and the guitarist --- before the latter's slippery solo --- is gritty and tight. In another Coltrane reference, the reading of Jimmy McHugh's and Harold Adamson's "Too Old to Go Steady" (that the saxophonist rendered so beaut-fully on Ballads in 1963) offers a lovely conversation between the guitarist and violinist, but it's Clarke's counterpoint that steals the show. Given the trio's collective love of Django Reinhardt, it makes sense they would cover his iconic "Nuages." Ponty moves it along the ledge by rendering it contemporary; he provides a simmering bossa lilt in the melody. The bassist's "Bit of Burd" is fleet, driving bebop; everyone is on fire, but Lagrne's arpeggios are on stun. The guitarist's "Strech" binds progressive jazz, modernism, post-bop, and gypsy swing. Ponty's "To and Fro," built on a four-note riff, allows the trio to really stretch out and get their funk on. In the latter, Clarke's bassline is fat, woody, and hard-grooving. The closer, "One Take," is built on a simple two-chord vamp. Loping violin and guitar lines twist, turn, and soar, creating a lithe, breezy, funky feel but Clarke whomps down hard, binding them to the tune's groove. The sound on D-Stringz is warm and bright, but so pristine, it lends an intimate living room feel to the proceedings. All the playing is relaxed, inquisitive and inventive. D-Stringz is the sound of musical invention and delight put on offer directly. It is a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience. --AllMusic Review by Thom Jurek

Stuart McCallum – City (2015) [Jazz, Naim, FLAC 44.1kHz/24bit]

The beautiful ambient-electronica-jazz soundscape City is the new album from Manchester guitarist and composer Stuart McCallum and his second studio album for Naim. City features a handful of seasoned musicians including McCallum on guitars,Robin Mullarkey, bass (ESKA, Roisin Murphy), Sean Foran (Trichotomy), Rhodes andRichard Spaven (Flying Lotus, Jos James) drums, synths and electronics. ViolinistEmma Sweeney guests on one track, Trio Seven. The album also features guest vocalists on four tracks, JP Cooper (newly signed to Island Records), Sharlene Hector(Basement Jaxx), Fridolijn Van Poll and Sophie Barker (Zero 7).

For his new album, City, McCallum steps even further into the world of electronica, whilst still maintaining that magical combination of both acoustic and electronic instruments that gives his music such a distinctive sound. However, two things make City stand out from his previous work. First, the addition of vocals and second, the decision to bring in London based drummer and producer, Richard Spaven, who he met during his time playing with Cinematic Orchestra, not only to perform, but to co-write and produce the album (all tracks are co-written by McCallum and Spaven apart from City).

Key tracks on the album include the evocative City; sampled extracts of JP Cooper's 'Something You Can't Have' play like glimpses of a city snatched from a car window. North Star, featuring Sharlene Hector, was written the old fashioned way, after studio computers decided to take an unscheduled rest. Effergy is simply sublime, an ambient meditation with McCallum's guitar hinting at something darker beneath the surface, with haunting vocal textures by Fridolijn Van Poll, while Said and Done features the otherworldly vocals of Zero 7's Sophie Barker.

Stuart McCallum's music has always thrived in that beautiful space where genres blur. With a wide range of influences from Machinedrum, Lau and Martin Simpson to Debussy, Taylor McFerrin and Burial, it's not difficult to see how this has come about. His 2011 Naim debut, Distilled, was a series of beautiful instrumental soundscapes and glorious melodies that owed as much to dance music as it did to jazz. Since then he has been busy with a wide range of other projects, including several collaborations with British artist Linder, scoring music for the Northern Ballet and working in an acoustic duo setting with Mike Walker.

Spaven has played with a host of artists, including 4hero, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Flying Lotus, Gregory Porter, Jos James and Robert Mitchell. His production style lies somewhere between the realms jazz and electronica and subtly bridges the gap between these two worlds using grooves that blend contemporary jazz and bass-heavy downtempo electronics. The melodies and layered harmonies from McCallum's guitar, as well as synth pads and bass, are all driven by Spaven's hypnotic grooves and provide the perfect foil for McCallum's often delicate and captivating sound.

This CD is a journey through what turns the voice into an instrument in constant search of more ways of expression: the melody, like in the best vocal jazz tradition; improvisation, as an extemporary creation and as a moment of communion with the other instruments; and writing, intended as a creative act to be shared and as a story about ones self to be told through the lyrics and their playing along with the music. Five out of the eight tracks in the CD are original lyrics and music compositions by Susanna Stivali (apart from "All the Joys" which takes the lyrics from an Emily Dickinson poem). The other three are re-adaptations of standard jazz (as in the 'jungle' version of "Lazy Afternoon"). The choice of the English language comes from the author's familiarity with it and its natural disposition for sounds and expressions. All pieces are totally detached from one another, moving from swing to "song-style" patterns, to more 'open' improvisation moments. There are also chances to enjoy the instrument players solo skills while they accompany the lyrics.
Apart from the skills of the three musicians, the most important factor is the band's harmony and the distinctive sound that results from it. Accompanying Susanna Stivali: Luca Mannutza at the piano, Marco Loddo at the double-bass, Nicola Angelucci at the drums, who have been playing together for about three years.
To make it all the more memorable there is the special appearance of Rosario Giuliani (with the kind authorisation of Dreyfus Jazz) at the sax, who plays in four of the five original pieces by Susanna Stivali. His presence is marked by his ability to interact with the vocalist and to interpret the original pieces, as well as by the way he manages to involve the listener into his solo performance.

--Marco Losavio, Jazzitalia

Louis Armstrong's counterpart at the piano was Earl Hines (1903), one of the few early heroes of jazz who was not born in Louisiana (he was born in Pennsylvania and in 1924 moved to Chicago). His technique augmented delicate virtuoso Armstrong-style moves with a rhythmic exuberance that set him apart from the tradition of Jelly Roll Morton. He was basically trying to play the piano like a trumpet or even a trombone.

Earl Kenneth Hines, universally known as Earl "Fatha" Hines (December 28, 1903 -- April 22, 1983), was an American jazz pianist and bandleader. He was one of the most influential figures in the development of jazz piano and, according to one major source, is "one of a small number of pianists whose playing shaped the history of jazz".

Trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, a member of the Earl Hines big-band along with Charlie Parker, wrote, "The piano is the basis of modern harmony. This little guy came out of Chicago, Earl Hines. He changed the style of the piano. You can find the roots of Bud Powell, Herbie Hancock, all the guys who came after that. If it hadn't been for Earl Hines blazing the path for the next generation to come, it's no telling where or how they would be playing now. There were individual variations but the style of ... the modern piano came from Earl Hines."

Pianist Lennie Tristano said, "Earl Hines is the only one of us capable of creating real jazz and real swing when playing all alone." Horace Silver said, "He has a completely unique style. No one can get that sound, no other pianist". Erroll Garner said, "When you talk about greatness, you talk about Art Tatum and Earl Hines". Count Basie said that Hines was, "The greatest piano player in the world".

Enrico Rava – New York Days (2009) [Jazz, Qobuz, FLAC 96kHz/24bit]

Artist: Enrico Rava
Title: New York Days
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 2009
Label: ECM Records GmbH
Duration: 01:17:05
Quality: FLAC 96kHz/24bit
Source: Qobuz
Recorded: February 2008 at Avatar Studios, New York

A new transatlantic quintet headed by Italian trumpeter Rava, recorded in New York in 2008 and a first ECM appearance for US tenorist Mark Turner, whose distilled, lean sound references Coltrane, Warne Marsh, Wayne Shorter and others. Turner's searching, analytical tone is in marked contrast to Enrico's lyrical flourishes, but the two make a fascinating pairing -- especially with the resolutely musical pianist Stefano Bollani finding points of contact, and making his own statements. Add in the gifted bassist Larry Grenadier (last heard on ECM with Charles Lloyd) and that most unpredictable of all drummers, Paul Motian, and you have here a truly remarkable band.

The neo-noir textures of Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava's fine ECM release, NEW YORK DAYS, recall evocative, jazz-based film scores such as Gato Barbieri's LAST TANGO IN PARIS or Miles Davis's ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS. Joined by a stellar cast, including the fine pianist Stefano Bollani, contemporary tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, and the apparently ageless Paul Motian on drums, Rava conjures a rain-soaked, black-and-white urban fantasia on a finely produced, 77-minute set of moody originals. Rava, Turner, and Bollani are all strong stylists, however, so there is little danger of their being fully submerged in the impressionistic dark waters. At times, the sound resembles the post-bop chamber jazz of Miles's celebrated '60s quintet, at others, the upscale European strains of film composer Nino Rota or tango master Astor Piazzolla. Either way, NEW YORK DAYS is one of the outstanding jazz releases of 2009. --- AllMusic Review by Richard Mortifoglio

Enrico Rava Quartet with Gianluca Petrella – Wild Dance (2015) [Jazz, Qobuz, FLAC 96kHz/24bit]

Artist: Enrico Rava Quartet with Gianluca Petrella
Title: Wild Dance
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 2015

Quality: FLAC 96kHz/24bit

Recorded: January 2015, Artesuono Recording Studios, Udine

A cross-generational project by the grand master of Italian Jazz. Energized by joyous experiences on the road the ever youthful Enrico Rava took his new working quartet of the last two years into Arte Suono Studio in Udine. Here they were joined by trombonist Gianluca Petrella, an internationally noted player through his contributions to Rava's three acclaimed post-millennium quintet albums Tribe (2011), The Words & The Days (2005) and Easy Living (2003). With Manfred Eicher producing, the five Italians recorded a program of Rava originals which cover a broad range of moods -- from brooding ballad playing to fiery uptempo post-bop. Once again Rava's playing makes it clear that lightness and intensity, elegant cool and emotional warmth are no opposites. Rava and Petrella form a peerless two-horn frontline, whether playing in unison, engaging in dialogue or taking their turns in extensive soloing. The rhythm section of Gabriele Evangelista, Enrico Morello, ("in my opinion the number one drummer in Italy today", says Rava) and guitarist Francesco Diodati give them both space and assured support.

The senior statesman, and easily the most recognizable name in Italian jazz, trumpeter Enrico Rava returns with a revised quintet line up on Wild Dance. Rava, who early in his career worked with saxophonist Steve Lacy, pianist Mal Waldron and trombonist Roswell Rudd, later went on to team with drummer Tony Oxley and sit in with the Global Unity Orchestra. His free jazz pedigree belies the fact that Rava has more often leaned toward the lyrical while incorporating his own liberal style of invention.
Two of the three most recent Rava releases, Rava on the Dance Floor (ECM, 2012) and The Monash Sessions (Jazzhead 2013) have featured the trumpeter in the company of rather large ensembles. Not since the alternating quintet/sextet of Tribe (ECM, 2011), has Rava recorded in the relatively smaller combo setting. Trombonist Gianluca Petrella and bassist Gabriele Evangelista return from the aforementioned outing, joined by new arrivals, Francesco Diodati on guitar and drummer Enrico Morello.
Rava has an understandable fondness for the trumpet-trombone interaction; the trombone being his first instrument before teaching himself the trumpet. He and Petrella engage in harmonies or counter each other in discourse and generally make for an unsurpassed brass frontline in addition to their many solo opportunities. Morello shows a deft touch in directing the music through Rava's many complex shifts. It is Diodati however, that is a major find here. The guitarist plays in a crystal clear, straight-forward style when he is up front and churns out airy harmonies when directly supporting Rava.
"Diva," the first of fourteen original compositions, and the subsequent "Space Girl" are airy but with dark undertones and both showcase the dynamics between Diodati and Rava. The latter features some fine playing from Evangelista as well. The bassist also sets the stage for the looser "Don't," opening the program to the wild part of Wild Dance. That sense of abandon is more fully realized with "Infant" where structures are fleeting and improvisation is more antagonistic. Rava wisely disseminates styles throughout the collection, allowing breathing time as on the gentle "Sola," then slowly rebuilding the fire on "Not Funny." The title track lives up to its name as it veers from lyrical to near experimental.
Rava peppers the album with an array of sounds from the mysterious---but lively---"F. Express" to fragmented inventiveness of "Cornette" and the collectively written "Improvisation." A small number of tracks are refreshed versions of older Rava compositions and they are comfortably at home with the newer material. Rather than settling down, the trumpeter continues to explore new ways of expressing himself in a variety of settings. While Rava maintains his method of using the middle and upper registers in a specific and functional manner, there is little about his work that does not completely engage. Wild Dance is the most satisfying of his albums in this decade. --Karl Ackermann, All About Jazz

Concord Music Group will reissue a remastered and expanded edition of John Coltrane's Afro Blue Impressions album on August 20, 2013. Enhanced by 24-bit remastering by Joe Tarantino, three bonus tracks, and new liner notes, the new reissue celebrates the 40th anniversary of Pablo Records, the jazz label founded by Norman Granz in 1973.

Afro Blue Impressions represents an anniversary within an anniversary. By the time Granz launched Pablo in 1973, he'd already stockpiled several years worth of previously-recorded tour performances in his vaults, including these sets from Stockholm and Berlin in late 1963 (October and November, respectively). This new two-disc reissue of the classic Coltrane Pablo album -- originally released as a double LP in 1977 -- arrives just a few weeks ahead of the 50th anniversary of the original concerts.

Coltrane fronts a stellar quartet on both European dates that includes McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. In addition to the nine tracks that appeared in the original Afro Blue Impressions double album, the reissue also includes three bonus tracks from the Stockholm date: "Naima," "I Want To Talk About You," and "My Favorite Things."

"When you compare and contrast the performance of a composition that was released on the original album to a different performance of the same composition from among the bonus tracks," says Afro Blue Impressions reissue producer Nick Phillips, "it perfectly illustrates just how restlessly creative Coltrane and his band were. Each song was a springboard for unpredictable improvisation and boundless creativity."

"These tracks brim with the wonder and the power of discovery," says Neil Tesser, author of the new liner notes accompanying the reissue. "At this juncture, the Coltrane Quartet existed in a state analogous to quantum mechanics . . . Each new performance yielded new insights. As the musicians gathered this data and sifted through it, they would arrive at the polished theories underlying the eventual masterworks to come, such as the album Crescent and the monumental suite A Love Supreme -- achievements that would then launch a new age of chaotic discovery, on such albums as Om, Sun Ship, and Meditations. How much those recordings will resonate on their 50th anniversaries will likely engender some controversy; Coltrane didn't live long enough to complete the journey that began with them, and the jury remains out, even decades later, regarding the impact of that work. But history long ago weighed the import of his work in 1963, when his music stretched and struggled its way toward becoming Coltrane's iconic stylistic statement".

The recordings that make up Afro Blue Impressions were acquired by jazz impresario/auteur Norman Granz during the tours he produced for many jazz artists during the 1960s, though they weren't issued until 1973. Recorded at shows in Berlin and Stockholm, the John Coltrane Quartet --- with pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison, and drummer Elvin Jones --- is in tremendous form here, using a familiar repertoire in order to expand upon the group's own building blocks in creating the new post-harmonic system that the saxophonist was developing. This is evident almost immediately in the first few minutes of opening number "Lonnie's Lament," where Coltrane begins reaching with his arpeggios to notes that aren't even on the horn in his frenetic solo and his duet with Jones. That said, there is enough of the quartet's own engagement with the tune's original architecture to satisfy all but the most conservative of Coltrane listeners. The brilliant razor-sharp focus on restraint and lyricism applied in "Naima" reveals Tyner utilizing numerous subtly shaded chord voicings to prod Coltrane's tender lyric exploration of the melody. Of course, the 21-minute version of "My Favorite Things" points directly at the territories the quartet would explore on the forthcoming albums Crescent and A Love Supreme and, in its most adventurous moments, somewhere beyond them. Tyner's arpeggios and ostinatos are sharp and fleet here, responding to Jones' driving snare and cymbals. Coltrane's soprano moves between blues, Dorian modes, and even Eastern scalar articulations in his solo. "Afro Blue" is a rhythm collision, where mode gives way to some of Trane's most angular soprano playing, pushing the limits of the instrument and his own dexterity to near breaking points. As the two long set-closers --- "Spiritual" and "Impressions" --- reveal, the group was not yet finished with more formal structures. They push at them, but still engage conventional ideas of harmony even as modes and meta scales dominate. Ample evidence can be found in the moaning gospel overtones of the former, which bring out the deep blues in Tyner's solo, and in Coltrane's knotty bop head, which commences the latter in advance of his manic, wildly imaginative solo. Afro Blue Impressions is the sound of one of the greatest --- albeit short-lived --- quartets in jazz history completely coming into its own in concert.

Recorded at Atlantic Studios in New York City in 1959, Bags & Trane features Milt Jackson and John Coltrane and was produced by Neshui Ertegn.

Vibraphonist Milt Jackson and tenor saxophonist John Coltrane make for a surprisingly complementary team on this 1959 studio session, their only joint recording. With fine backup by pianist Hank Jones, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Connie Kay, Bags and Trane stretch out on two of Jackson's originals (including "The Late Late Blues") and three standards: a romping "Three Little Words," "The Night We Called It a Day," and the rapid "Be-Bop." This enjoyable music has been included as part of Rhino's Heavyweight Champion: The Complete Atlantic Recordings box. --AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow

Artist: John Coltrane
Title: Ballads
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 1962/2008
Label: Impulse Records
Duration: 32:08
Quality: FLAC 96kHz/24bit
Source: HDTracks

A breathtaking album by the single most influential saxophone player (and perhaps jazz artist) in history. Featuring his stellar quartet of McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, and Jimmy Garrison, BALLADS finds Coltrane at his most pensive and lyrical. The result is one of the great jazz albums of the 20th Century. Absolutely essential.

Throughout John Coltrane's discography there are a handful of decisive and controversial albums that split his listening camp into factions. Generally, these occur in his later-period works such as Om and Ascension, which push into some pretty heady blowing. As a contrast, Ballads is often criticized as too easy and as too much of a compromise between Coltrane and Impulse! (the two had just entered into the first year of label representation). Seen as an answer to critics who found his work complicated with too many notes and too thin a concept, Ballads has even been accused of being a record that Coltrane didn't want to make. These conspiracy theories (and there are more) really just get in the way of enjoying a perfectly fine album of Coltrane doing what he always did --- exploring new avenues and modes in an inexhaustible search for personal and artistic enlightenment. With Ballads he looks into the warmer side of things, a path he would take with both Johnny Hartman (on John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman) and with Duke Ellington (on Duke Ellington and John Coltrane). Here he lays out for McCoy Tyner mostly, and the results positively shimmer at times. He's not aggressive, and he's not outwardly. Instead he's introspective and at times even predictable, but that is precisely Ballads' draw.

01 -- Say It (Over And Over Again)

"In preparing these hi def remasters, we were very conscientious about maintaining the feel of the original releases while adding a previously unattainable transparency and depth. It now sounds like you've set up your chaise lounge right in the middle of Rudy Van Gelder's studio!" -- Blue NotePresident, Don Was.

Tenor saxophonist John Coltrane was one of the most innovative, influential and respected figures in jazz history. In 1957, Coltrane created a masterpiece with the release of Blue Train. The album has been widely regarded by both fans and critics as one of the greatest jazz records of all time. It was his second album as a band leader and found him accompanied by greats including Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Kenny Drew, Paul Chambers and "Philly" Joe Jones. The album is a scintillating display of Coltrane's innate leadership abilities. The stunning horn arrangements add a unique distinction symbolic of Coltrane and his band. A showcase of his versatility, Coltrane soars through tunes including "I'm Old Fashioned" and "Lazy Bird."

Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.

A collection of the legendary saxophonist's sideman sessions for Blue Note Records from 1956-1957, when Coltrane was a regular member of the Miles Davis Quintet and played with pianist Thelonious Monk. This set, conceived by former Blue Note Records president Bruce Lundvall, marks the first time Coltrane's sideman sessions for the label have been collected in one place; albums include recordings led by Paul Chambers (Chambers' Music, a.k.a. High Step, and Whims of Chambers), Johnny Griffin (A Blowing Session) and Sonny Clark (Sonny's Crib).

The 2014 John Coltrane anthology Sideman: Trane's Blue Note Sessions compiles cuts the influential saxophonist appeared on for other artists' various Blue Note albums. These are sides Coltrane recorded in 1956-1957, before he was the innovative giant he would become in the '60s. During this time, he was a working member of trumpeter Miles Davis' quintet, and an occasionally featured player with pianist Thelonious Monk. Here, however, Blue Note president Bruce Lundvall has brought together cuts Coltrane recorded for album sessions with three heavy-hitting artists, pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Paul Chambers, and saxophonist Johnny Griffin, with tracks culled from such albums as Clark's 1959 date Sonny's Crib, Chambers' 1956 and 1957 albums Chambers' Music and Whims of Chambers, and Griffin's 1957 classic A Blowin' Session. This is a three-disc set, presented in the original mono audio, and accompanied by a 34-page liner note booklet. While these tracks have been anthologized elsewhere, Sideman: Trane's Blue Note Sessions marks the first time all of Coltrane's recordings as a hired gun for the storied jazz label have been collected in one place; that alone makes this a welcome addition to Coltrane's catalog, not to mention a fascinating portrait of the saxophonist on the verge of his most transformative period.

Saxophonist John Coltrane was among the most important, and most controversial, figures in jazz. He influenced innumerable musicians, and remains one of the most significant tenor saxophonists in jazz history. Coltrane's 1959 Atlantic Records debut became his most influential album, and helped bring jazz to the mainstream. This classic is arguably Trane's most celebrated release, the full flowering of his mighty playing and one of the best jazz albums of all time! Giant Steps features Paul Chambers, Wynton Kelly, Tommy Flanagan, Jimmy Cobb, and Art Taylor.

Giant Steps is the fifth studio album by jazz musician John Coltrane as leader, released in 1960 on Atlantic Records, catalogue SD 1311. His first album for his new label Atlantic, it is the breakthrough album for Coltrane as a leader, and many of its tracks have become practice templates for jazz saxophonists. In 2004, it was one of fifty recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected this album as part of its suggested "Core Collection" calling it "Trane's first genuinely iconic record." In 2003, the album was ranked number 103 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
History will undoubtedly enshrine this disc as a watershed the likes of which may never truly be appreciated. Giant Steps bore the double-edged sword of furthering the cause of the music as well as delivering it to an increasingly mainstream audience. Although this was John Coltrane's debut for Atlantic, he was concurrently performing and recording with Miles Davis. Within the space of less than three weeks, Coltrane would complete his work with Davis and company on another genre-defining disc, Kind of Blue, before commencing his efforts on this one. Coltrane (tenor sax) is flanked by essentially two different trios. Recording commenced in early May of 1959 with a pair of sessions that featured Tommy Flanagan (piano) and Art Taylor (drums), as well as Paul Chambers --- who was the only bandmember other than Coltrane to have performed on every date. When recording resumed in December of that year, Wynton Kelly (piano) and Jimmy Cobb (drums) were instated --- replicating the lineup featured on Kind of Blue, sans Miles Davis of course. At the heart of these recordings, however, is the laser-beam focus of Coltrane's tenor solos. All seven pieces issued on the original Giant Steps are likewise Coltrane compositions. He was, in essence, beginning to rewrite the jazz canon with material that would be centered on solos --- the 180-degree antithesis of the art form up to that point. These arrangements would create a place for the solo to become infinitely more compelling. This would culminate in a frenetic performance style that noted jazz journalist Ira Gitler accurately dubbed "sheets of sound." Coltrane's polytonal torrents extricate the amicable and otherwise cordial solos that had begun decaying the very exigency of the genre --- turning it into the equivalent of easy listening. He wastes no time as the disc's title track immediately indicates a progression from which there would be no looking back. Line upon line of highly cerebral improvisation snake between the melody and solos, practically fusing the two. The resolute intensity of "Countdown" does more to modernize jazz in 141 seconds than many artists do in their entire careers. Tellingly, the contrasting and ultimately pastoral "Naima" was the last tune to be recorded, and is the only track on the original long-player to feature the Kind of Blue quartet. What is lost in tempo is more than recouped in intrinsic melodic beauty. --Lindsay Planer
